The University of Waterloo's startup incubator in Kitchener, with free desks, labs and coaching for full-time founders, and no equity taken.
Velocity is the University of Waterloo's entrepreneurship centre. It runs a startup incubator in the Innovation Arena in Kitchener, and programs and spaces on campus. It says it has helped the founders of more than 500 startups since 2008.
It takes no equity and charges nothing. Founders don't need to have studied at Waterloo, but every founder must work on the startup full time. New teams work out of Velocity at least one day a week for their first three months.
It takes applications all year and brings in new teams every two months. After a virtual interview, the selection committee sets milestones and meets the team again to review them. It says it accepts about 10% of applicants.
What it offers
45,000 square feet of offices for 60 to 80 startups, with up to 10 desks per startup
A hardware space with 3D printers, laser cutters, an electronics lab, a paint room and a wood and metal workshop
A lab with more than $1.5 million of analytical and testing equipment, and a certified Biosafety Level 2 lab
Coaching from advisors who have been founders themselves
Introductions to customers, service providers and investors, including Velocity Fund, a pre-seed fund that shares its space
For University of Waterloo students, staff and faculty: programs such as Cornerstone, spaces on campus, and a free GPU server for students
Grants and awards for University of Waterloo students and new graduates, such as $10,000 Momentum Grants
